To pierce or not to pierce???
So I have a dillema.. I always kinda thought I didn't want to pierce my kids ears till they were older. I wasn't againts people who got there babies ears pierced but when I got mine pierced it seemed like they were always infected and i just didn't want my little baby to have super sore ears... Anyway I have lots of friends that I have talked to about this in the last 2 years and I still have yet to talk to someone that wasn't 100% for piercing there babies ears and I haven't talked to one person that there baby got infected from the earrings.. Anyway my dillema is now Sophie has been asking and asking to get pretty earrings. I always said when my kids were old enough to ask for them I would let them. Is 2 and a half a terrible age to pierce your ears.. and should I just get Ella's done while she's little.. I need help. Maybe I should just wait till there like 5.. that's how old I was...

i just bought kaida some clip ins...she loves them. if it were up to me i would have pierced her ears when she was a baby...its daddy that says no
I got Zoe's ears pierced at 10 mos and it was great, they did both ears at the same time and she cried for a few seconds. I was VERY nervous about getting her ears done because I have always had infections from my earrings growing up. Luckily she has had no problem and i'm glad I did it earlier then later.
i don't have girls but I've always thought I'd be a firm believer in letting them make the choice. You definitely have to prepare them that it will hurt and stuff but if they want it bad enough I say let Sophie get it done. My mom told me when I was 4 that I had to ask the ear piercing lady myself and i wasn't allowed to cry and I did it. I think it's kinda mean not to let your kid have the choice. Although it's probably pretty likely that Ella will want those fancy earrings too... especially being your kid! Good luck with whatever happens!
i got ry's done at 5 months, i think it is best cause then you can take care of it for the 6 weeks that you have to put solution on them 3 times a day....and they dont run away and put up a stink when they are that little...so for ella, i say do it, for sophie, that is harder....as long as you think she wont play with them and stuff, then i am sure it will be ok...i think i woudl do it....
i wanted to do alexa's when she was little, but daddy said no. i had to be 12 before i got mine and always hated that i had to be so old. so we agreed on 8 as the magic #. we'll see if that lasts!!! :-)
I had to wait until I was 14 and I hated waiting that long! My oldest sister had hers done at around 1 year old, and then had to get them repiearces as the hole got to be too high as she grew up...making it hard to enforce the one earing per ear guildline since she had 2 holes per ear instead of 2. I think it is a great idea to have the child wait until they can ask for it. Personally, I will wait until Samantha asks to get her ears pierced as it is one less thing to deal with as their hair is growing in and gets tangled on anythign and everything since it is so fine.
Also, I had a friend who had their babies ears pierced only to find out that she was allergic to most earing types (Only Plantinum or Gold for her ears!) so they decided to remove them and let the girl decide when she was old enough to not lose them as they would be expensive ones.
Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you stick with it for all your kids and that Spence backs you up 100% on your decision.
Hey Kelsey, it's Dawna (Fredriksen) Jensen. I just had to comment here and say that I always felt the same as you -- let them make their own choice and be old enough to deal with the consequences. BUT our little girl got hers pierced at 3 years old cuz my husband wanted her to & she's so into "bling bling" & all things girl so since she wanted it too we did it for her birthday in April. And it's been fine. She hardly even flinch when getting them done. We did have a couple issues. One ear did become infected only after we'd put a different backing on and later learned that it was a cheaper metal--aluminum. Mine did the same thing. IF you disinfect them everyday with the antiseptic & she's not one to touch them all the time you'd be fine. I'm fine with it. I think it's darling on kids. I say go for it. Sophie would look adorable with earrings. Ella would be fine & so cute too. My sister in law Dana just did hers and her 3 daughters the youngest being 7 mths old at the time, with even the less expensive earrings and cheaper metal and it's been just fine for them too. We went with 14 qt gold just to be on the safe side cuz I have sensitive skin and worried about Kinlee's being that way as well. So that's another thing you could consider. It cost us 41 dollars at Claires. WE're happy with it! Dooo it!!
dont do it!!! though darling!!!! i think girls should have to wait till there a little older. If they get all the girl things when they are young they dont have anything to look forward to and nothing will be exciting for them when they are older. I think when they ask and are old enough to take care of their ears and clean them everyday then they are old enough. There i said it and im sure every mother thinks im stupid but thats my opinion. Im not even a mother; why am i even putting thoughts into this. Now that i think about it- do what you want. :)
Hmmm...that can be a hard one. I am thinking along the same lines as erin, above.
I remember my sister and I begging for pierced ears when we were in 7th grade. FINALLY our parents said yes, but then one night my sister took hers out for whatever reason and since we are twins I took mine out and man oh man were my parents mad. We had to wait until we were 16 I think.
No right or wrong, just preference I suppose.
just thought i'd let you know if u do get them done, make sure the backings on the earrings twist on not just push on (we lost a few pairs of REALLY expensive earrings by not getting the screwed on ones.)
Whether to pierce your dd's ears as an infant, toddler or little girl when she asks is always a personal decision for sure. I had the same dilemma for sure with our dd noticing mommy's earrings and then finding out the sticker earrings just don't work very well.
We pierced our dd at 27 mos. Like you, I was unsure, but when I asked our ped, she said little girls ages 3-5 are the one with the most problems and she recommends doing it under the age of 3 when mommy can care for them, they won't remember having them done just grow up with them.
I also pierced our YDD right after doing our oldest dd on the same day at six weeks old so I could take care of both girls ears. It was very easy to do.
Our ped gave me some suggestions for moms having their dd's / little girls including toddler's ears pierced.
If you're thinking about it, then your mommy intuition is telling to go ahead and I'd do both girls now.
Promise, both girls will thank you later.
Write me an e-mail if you'd like our ped's tips.
